Radiology Business Journal: Managing the Revenue Cycle, featuring Dr. Sheri Jordan – 12/01/2009
|
| |
Viewing revenue-cycle management as a function limited only to billing is shortsighted at best, and is more likely to be a mistake. Revenue-cycle management affects the entire practice, imaging center, and hospital radiology department, from a new patient’s first inquiry (whether made by telephone, through an online portal, or in person) to the receipt of payment for services rendered.

Coding Edge Magazine: Stop Struggling with Critical Care Coding, by Ron Stunz, MD, FACEP - 12/01/2009
|
| |
The core requirement defining emergency medicine as a specialty is the ability to carry out critical interventions for patients with organ- or life-threatening illness and injury. Timely interventions in severe infectious, ischemic, traumatic, surgical, and other emergent scenarios have a direct impact on a patient’s outcome. Not so obviously—but only slightly less importantly in the climate of rising and scrutinized health care costs—what is done within the first hour of a patient’s presentation can significantly reduce downstream costs for care.

| Coding Edge Magazine: Common Documentation and Coding Errors Undermine Anesthesiology Reimbursement, by Pam Linton, CPC- 12/24/2009 |
| |
With reimbursement pressures continuing to grow, ensuring that anesthesia groups collect every dollar they are entitled to has never been more important. Fortunately, this task is made easier if anesthesia groups take steps to reduce or eliminate common documentation and coding mistakes. Reducing errors requires a detailed, up-to-date understanding of anesthesia coding, a working knowledge of anatomy and open channels of communication between coders and physicians. A process that allows coders to follow-up with physicians on specific case questions and also offers real-time feedback regarding incomplete or inaccurate documentation can go a long way toward strengthening the anesthesia revenue cycle. Emergency Physicians Monthly: How to Defend Your Salary by John Holstein – 10/01/2009
|
| |
As politicians and interest groups jockey for position in America’s healthcare debate, it will become increasingly important for emergency physicians to come to the negotiating table and defend their worth. There is gross inequity within the current reimbursement system – EPs care for some of the nation’s sickest patients for some of the lowest physician wages – and it could get even worse. Emergency physicians must therefore be able to speak clearly about the value of emergency medicine and the specific reimbursement needs of the specialty.

HealthLeaders Media, Private Payer Class Action Lawsuits by
Ed Gaines, JD – 08/17/2009 |
| |
As a result, physician groups must scrutinize all contract language and eliminate any provisions that give carriers blanket authorization to pay based on "standard payment policies" or other, equally broad language. If these "standard payment policies" are based on bundling edits that do not recognize certain procedures coded and billed with the -25 modifier (for example, a procedure is not "separately eligible for payment" but instead is bundled into the E/M service) then the payment provisions could violate the settlement agreement.

| RT Image - When Writing off is No Longer an Option; Effective Denial Management Keeps Cash Flowing by Richard C.H. Masson, MBA, MHA - 05/06/2009 |
| |
In the past, many radiology groups didn’t give much thought to their revenue cycle. They assumed that low accounts receivable days and a high net collection percentage accurately reflected a healthy billing process. And if a denied claim fell below a specific dollar threshold, they simply wrote it off. But as reimbursements continue to decrease and payer regulations multiply, radiology groups are finding themselves scrambling to adapt to an increasingly harsh economic environment. In today’s market, only those groups that take every available step to ensure that they’re being paid fully and promptly for services rendered can hope to
prosper in the long run.
